California Leads the Nation
by Kaitlin Funaro

California’s prison population is the highest in the country but other large states like Texas aren’t far behind. Where California really tops the list, though, is its recidivism rate. Sixty-six percent of California felons return to prison within 3 years. In Texas, only 30 percent are sent back behind bars.

States like Florida and Illinois rearrest far more of their former inmates but don’t necessarily send them to prison. In Florida, prisoners are released onto parole to shorten their prison sentences as a reward for good behavior. Often, if parole is violated, they get sent back. It’s not considered a new conviction since the prisoner is finishing the original sentence. In California, prisoners are released onto parole at the end of their sentence so any crime committed, even a parole violation, results in a new prison sentence.

See how California measures up against the top 5 states for recidivism.
