We met up with Bob Metcalfe, inventor and Ethernet patent-holder, at Connectivity Week in Santa Clara in June. Metcalfe was the founder of 3Com Corporation and is now a venture capitalist with Polaris Venture Partners. After his keynote at the conference, Metcalfe sat down for a candid interview to talk about how the Internet is going to transform the energy industry. Metcalfe explains how he thinks the innovation that will transform the energy industry will evolve from research institutes to start-up companies. Anyone interested in hearing how technology advancements are born listen on.

Metcalfe explains how energy is the next "killer application" for the Internet--in case you didn't think it was important enough already.

Now he talks about the timeline of getting the energy industry on the Web and when we can expect the "Enernet" to become a reality.
